Admission Procedure

In response to the advertisement placed by the National Institute of Management Studies in the Newspapers / Magazines, Candidates may apply directly without Company Sponsorship. All Candidates are required to fill up the Application Form (Available in our Website) and submit it together with relevant documents. National Institute of Management Studies staff will scrutinise the applications and will inform the candidate the date on which he is required to appear for an Entrance Test followed by an interview. Successful candidates would be advised about the joining formalities. The parents of Ratings who come from outside Kolkata are required to appoint local guardians, who may be contacted in case of any emergency.

Course Highlights

The duration of the Pre-Sea Training Course for General Purpose Ratings is (25 Weeks) 6 Months. The course is fully residential as per The Directorate General of Shipping norms, requiring all the trainees to reside in-house. The course will cover all aspects of the sea-faring profession (Deck and Engine), which also include workshop training, rope and mast climbing, life saving, fire fighting exercises and ship visits etc. Pre Sea Training for Ratings will also include the, following basic STCW Courses :

  • Personal Survival Techniques (PST)
  • Elementary First Aid Course (EFA)
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (PSSR)
  • Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FP & FF)
  • Oil Tanker Familiarization (OTF)
  • Security Training for Seafarers with Designated Security Duties (STSDSD)

All Instructions are imparted in the English language. Physical training, swimming, parade and sports are part of the curriculum and are mandatory.

Aims :

To provide pre-sea training that would balance theoretical knowledge, practice l skills, safety consciousness and efficiency for those who wish to take up seafaring as a profession to serve as ratings on merchant ships, not only Indian ships but also those flying foreign flags.

Objectives :

By conducting compulsorily residential, regimented and disciplined courses to impart training that would, after adequate sea experience, enable a rating to comply with Regulation II/4 and III/4 of STCW'95, achieve the standards of competence as specified in Table A-II/4 ('Rating forming part of a Navigation watch') and A-III/4 ('Rating forming part of a Engineering watch') of STCW Code '95 and hence become eligible to serve on merchant ships as a Watch Keeping Rating.The curriculum intends to make the rating competent all round with hands on skills in both the deck and engine departments and not merely comply with minimum requirements.

Academic Qualification:

Pass with aggregate 40% marks in 10th Standard from a recognised Board Science and Mathematics as subjects and minimum 40% marks in English language either in 10th or 10+2 Exam.

Age Limitation :

Admission is open to all Indian citizens, who are between the ages of 17- 5 to 25 years on the date of commencement of the course.

EVALUATION :

Every Rating is required to attend at least 90% of the lectures and pass the final examination conducted by the Board of Examinations for Seafarers Trust (BEST).
